Stuck In Illness

Wow! What a big subject! I have had so many clients who are stuck in illness. And, personally I’ve had a great deal of experience with also being stuck in this place.

What does it mean to be stuck in illness? Simply: when you can’t seem to get well.

You can arrive at that stuck place many different ways: Conventional medicine has no more answers for you and then you explore a few alternative methods but you never seem to get totally well. Or conventional medicine doesn’t believe you’re really sick and you just live with the pain or on pain medication. Or you’re sick and never do anything about it, living with it. Or you just simply run out of the energy to try and get well.

The reasons are plentiful and sometimes very subtle but they all arrive at that same place: living in illness.

How do you get unstuck? By getting the right knowledge. This has been a theme of many of my drifts in illness. And it does feel like a drift. In 1990, I got very ill with intestinal cramping, the pain was bad. It went on for three years. No one could figure it out. And at some point, I just gave up trying. The craps would come on suddenly and for no apparent reason. Sometimes it was so bad;I would end up in the emergency room where they didn’t know what to do with me. This illness and pain changed my way of being in the world.

For 6 months, I was afraid to leave the house that I would be stuck some where, sick. For most of that time, I followed the advice of a holistic doctor who prescribed specific supplements to me. I believed in him and still do but I didn’t get better. I would never leave the house without a carry-bag of medications and herbs, a habit that took years to let go of.

One day, I was in Albuquerque and decided to stop and say hello to a famous holistic doctor who was close to some friends of mine. I decided in that moment to ask her to evaluate me. She said I had a tape worm and parasites! As soon as she told me, it made perfect sense to me. I started her program and in a matter of weeks I was finally better!

Where did I innocently go wrong in this journey?

First, because it would come and go, I got fooled into thinking I was getting better. And thus didn’t take more aggressive action. But I knew inside I wasn’t getting well. I didn’t listen to that voice inside. I didn’t have the depth of knowledge then how important that voice was.

Second, I didn’t know there were reliable holistic ways to diagnose me. This can be described as a lack of knowledge or not asking the right questions or not asking what questions I should be asking.

Third, I should have accepted that the wonderful holistic doctor I worked with was not going to get me better. The proof was evident. I was afraid to venture out into the unknown and stayed with what was familiar even though it wasn’t working! Sound familiar!

Fourth, I didn’t push the conventional doctors to give me more extensive testing. I just sat back on it, almost like I went to sleep around the idea of being well. Make sense, brothers and sisters? Being sick became familiar.

It blows my mind to think that during that time if I had the right knowledge, I could have walked into any health market and asked for herbs for parasites and in a matter of weeks I would have been well. I was sick for three years! I can’t even describe the pain I went through. Many of you know exactly what I am talking about.

Fifth, maybe I should have found someone like me! Maybe, I didn’t look for that person. A person who would say, as I say to many clients, “I know you’re tired of going to doctors, of trying this program and that one. I know you’re exhausted but you can’t give up! Keep trying, keep looking. There is always a cure. Whether it’s inside you or in some office somewhere. There is an answer. You can be well again!”

A wise friend once said to me,”The thing that will cure you is always close at hand.” She was right–it was right down the block at the health store!

Wow! I have waited a long time to write this one, brothers and sisters! I truly hope this has helped.

Loving What is

Loving What Is

Life seems to be a continual challenge. One thing after another and the eternal search for happiness. We spend so much of our lives creating an identity for ourselves with all the likes and dislikes that go with it. These preferences build association within us, which then turn into expectations.

We compare our beliefs to other peoples and then defend our position making them wrong as they don’t fit in with our picture of how ‘it should be’. Life is unlimited. It is arrogant and naive to think that only our thoughts and beliefs are right. They may be right for us with the limited knowledge we have at this moment but the more you learn and grow the more opportunities there are for new information to become available for you.

How many beliefs have you held that seemed to support your way of thinking and then something happened to change your point of view? Take Father Christmas for example as a child you believed fully in him then as you became older you let go of that belief. At the time it was true for you and now it isn’t. What would happen if you treated all your knowledge with the thought that this is what I know today and tomorrow, new information maybe available to me to gain a new perspective? How liberating!

Allow everyone his or her point of view. Live and let live. All the beliefs we hold get in our way. Instead of allowing life to ‘be’ we look at our situation and cast a judgement on it – either we like or dislike it. The choice you make will bring you a corresponding experience. Our dislikes are really our resistances to ‘what is’. By not living in the present and not accepting the current reality or situation we find ourselves in we create more problems for ourselves. We get caught up in the emotions that follow, because we have chosen not to accept it but react against it instead.

All this happens because we had an expectation. We believed our thoughts to be real and compared them to our experience, which highlighted that they don’t match. When seeing your situation in this way it is magnified. Our sense of self is threatened as our ego tries to make sense of what’s happening. Fighting it all the way. Our tendency might be to become a victim of the circumstances or to launch a full on attack. Either way, it only leads to more pain and suffering. We can’t change the situation as it has already happened so the only logical thing we can do it to accept it.

When you notice all your likes and dislikes it becomes apparent how futile they are and how they enslave us. We are led from one experience to another, like being on a roller coaster of emotions. What would happen if you dropped all those cravings and aversions? What if you were just happy anyway? Not because of circumstances but because you have chosen to be. Probably sounds impossible. When you stop and think about it for a minute it is the only logical thing you can do. To find that happiness within allows you to keep it, as it doesn’t depend on any outside factors. It is your chosen natural state of being.

Situations come to us everyday. Our job is not to fight them; our job is to accept them. It is our reactions that determine how we experience life, not the situations we find ourselves in. Can you view your life as a gift bringing you valuable lessons for your growth or do you have the view that there is a vengeful God handing our bad experiences to you? Life isn’t personal, although because we are so attached to our identity and defending our positions we take it to be so.

Have you ever tried to accept anyone or anything in your life unconditionally? Accepting them for who they are without prejudice or judgement? It’s not about being tolerant of them as tolerance implies that you are putting up with something. True acceptance allows compassion to come in and for you to see their true essence without the clouds of your judgement upon them. It’s a beautiful experience. Acceptance brings love into your heart and the experience of unconditional love that flows from there. Can your ego allow you to act in this way?

It is possible although it may take time to undo past habitual behaviour patterns. We are so used to defending our position to the end – what will it feel like not to do that anymore? To allow someone else to be ‘right’ and not have to attempt to impose you’re way on to him or her? It’s a very humbling experience. We each have equally valid points of view and the more you try to convince someone that your way is right they will counter defend with just as strong an argument of why their way is right. No-one wins and both parties leave feeling frustrated and with ill thoughts towards the other.

The more awareness you can bring into your life the more you will notice how you interact with ‘life’. All our reactions have associated feelings, making them even more challenging. When a situation occurs, feelings and emotions surge through our bodies and the reaction comes from there. It is mostly unconscious and very powerful. It practically takes you over. The strength of the reactions adds fuel to the situation making it even more unbearable. Can you see how we are slaves to our emotions? The feelings of being hard done by or mistreated or taken advantage of create associated reactions and depending on the depth of attachment you have to each one will depend on the intensity of the reaction. Have you watched other people react and felt how out inappropriate it was? This points to the depth of attachment and associated feelings they have to the situation they find themselves in. Fighting to regain control in a situation they have deemed uncomfortable or not to their liking. The anger, aggression, sadness or which ever emotion is chosen, is projected to others and they feel fully justified in doing so.

Next time your find yourself in a challenging situation, try to take the time to observe the feelings and emotions rise within you. Feel the power it has to overwhelm you and how quickly the reaction can happen. Know that this is ‘your’ reaction to the situation. It may be impossible for a while, but try to just ‘be’ with the feelings. The other person is having the same surge of emotions through their body only they have chosen to give in to theirs. When you manage to observe yours you will have started the process of breaking down that habit. It is a very powerful experience and once you have experienced it you will be amazed at how reactionary we are. How unconsciously we live our lives. People are creatures of habit and the more we do something the more habitual it becomes within us. Changing our habits can change our experience of life. Instead of being rigid and limited in our perceptions we can flow with life and be open to the unlimited possibilities available to us.

Change brings us out of our comfort zone, making it less appealing to make any voluntarily. Although there is one constant is life and that is impermanence – everything changes. We are in a constant process of change be it at the subatomic level or the physical level. Life by its nature is impermanent so why defend it so – allow it to be and flow with the changes. By not allowing you only create more tension and resistance within yourself. Let it go and love life as it is.

A Review of the Valkyries by Paulo Coelho

I found Paulo Coelho’s The Valkyries a bit of an enigma. I suspect the author at least partly intended it to be so. In a nutshell, the author seeks to discover new aspects of his psyche, to develop new angles on his existing skills. After a consultation with his mentor, he and his wife set off for a jaunt in the Mojave Desert to find what it is that they seek. Our author is in engaged in a quest, a search for his personal Angel. The reader, I am sure, will be convinced from the start that she accompanied him throughout.

Principles of Holographic Awareness, Part 2: the Whole in Every Part

Can you “see the world in a grain of sand, and heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hands, and eternity in an hour?” (William Blake). I say that you can and you are, but most people do not recognize that they are constantly touching the infinite, nor do they appreciate the expansive, all-encompassing nature of their normal, every-day, here-and-now awareness.

4 Simple Steps to Set Your 2008 Intentions

At the beginning of the year, you may find yourself stuck between celebrating the success of last year, planning for the New Year and perhaps overwhelmed by everything you have on your full plate. You’re not alone. Most conscious entrepreneurs go through this type of celebration, anticipation and yes, sometimes even overwhelm. That being said, the beginning of a new year is the perfect time to take some time to get laser-focused on what you want to experience and manifest this year.

For the past 5 years, my husband and I have always spent New Year’s Day clarifying and writing our intentions for the New Year. This ritual is a highlight of the year and one that continues to catapult growth on all levels, and help me fully prepare for the year… mentally, emotionally, practically and spiritually.

You’ve probably heard that the most powerful thing you can do to manifest your goals is to write them down! There is something about putting your goals in writing that begins to align the Universe to help you realize them (or something better).

The following four step process is one of my personal New Year strategies. I hope you’ll print this out and get started with your intentions today!

Step 1: Complete

The first step to setting clear intentions for the New Year is to feel complete with the events and experiences of the last year. To do this, simply reflect on the past year… beginning back in January. In your mind, run through the year noting the accomplishments, challenges, successes, growth, opportunities and gifts that you experienced. Once you’ve taken time to reflect on the past year, allow yourself to release anything that you may be hanging on to. Take several deep relaxing breaths as you envision completing the year and become fully present to this moment and all the potential that lies ahead for this year.

Step 2: Celebrate

Next, take out a pen and paper and write a list of everything you have to celebrate from the past year. Focus on all areas of your life, including spiritual (connection to God, meditation, spiritual practice, spiritual community, trust in Divine plan, etc.), personal (health, relationships, fulfillment, family, friends, community, love, etc.), financial (overall financial health, income, debt reduction, investments, money management, etc.), business (new strategies, marketing programs, joint ventures, products and services, client successes, gross income, profitability, support, etc.). Take time to complete your list thoroughly and review it to fully embrace your success and evolution this past year.

Step 3: Focus

Once you finish completing and celebrating, now become focused on all that you want to manifest this year. Simply create the picture of this coming year in your mind’s eye, getting a clear vision of what you intend to manifest and experience (don’t write anything down, yet… just envision it in your mind and feel it in your heart). Again, as you did in Step 2 “Celebrate”, be sure to include the areas of spiritual, personal, financial and business.

Step 4: Commit

The last step is to commit your intentions for the year by putting them in writing. This is the most powerful step of the journey; it’s the beginning of taking the vision in your mind and bringing it into reality. There are two different methods I recommend for writing down your intentions for the year, choose the one that feels like the right fit for you: 1) write a description of your year from the standpoint of January 1, 2009 including all the details of what has transpired during this year… be grateful in advance! 2) Write a bullet point-list of your intentions for the year in each of these 4 areas (spiritual, personal, financial and business). You can write your list on index cards putting one area of your life on a different card.

Once you complete this four step process (hopefully you’ve also listened to the guided meditation on this process), there is one last BONUS step to include with all of your writings. And, that is to write “this or something better” at the bottom of the paper. Because, as expansive as your intentions and vision for this year are, God/The Universe sees so much more for you. There are gifts waiting for you that you cannot begin to imagine. So, enjoy being clear and energized about this incredible year knowing that you also leave space for miracles to occur.

What is Karma and How Does it Work?

All faiths advocate doing good to one another.  They all stress that bad and evil deeds reap bad and evil things.   The philosophy of karma is not only in Middle Eastern faiths, such as Hinduism and Buddhism, but has been incorporated into western religions as well, including Christianity and Judaism.  The “Golden Rule”, “Do unto Others as You Would Have them Do unto you”, is Karma at is simplest.

Three Steps To Christian Maturity

A recent medical study reveals just how difficult change is for people. Roughly 600,000 people have heart bypasses a year in America. These people are told after their bypasses that they must change their lifestyle. The heart bypass is a temporary fix. They must change their diet. They must quit smoking and drinking. They must exercise and reduce stress.

In essence, the doctors say, “Change or die.”

You would think that a near-death experience would forever grab the attention of the patients. You would think they would vote for change. You would think the argument for change is so compelling that the patients would make the appropriate lifestyle alterations. Sadly that is not the case.

Ninety percent of the heart patients do not change. They remain the same, living the status quo. Study after study indicates that two years after heart surgery, the patients have not altered their behavior. Instead of making changes for life, they choose death.

Change is that difficult. The majority of the heart patients choose not to change. They act as if they would rather die.
As Christians, we are to change. To grow. Not to stagnate.

Our growth as a follower of Christ will prepare us for a productive, fruitful life. Our growth demands that we understand and apply three simple principles

1) My Spiritual Age Does Not Indicate My Spiritual Depth

”We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain because you are slow to learn. In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again.” Hebrews 5:11-12a

The author was referring to the order of priests under Melchizedek and its superiority to the order of priests under. His readers had become “slow to learn ” either due to spiritual laziness or neglect.

They had ample time to grow, understand truth, mature and teach. But the time had been wasted.

Instead of being teachers of the Word, they still needed teachers to explain the basics to them.

It is the same for us.

Are we growing, changing?

2) My Spiritual Age Should Indicate My Spiritual Diet

”You need milk, not solid food! But solid food is for the mature.” Hebrews 14a

The milk of the Word is for the immature while the solid food is for the mature

We’re not meant to live on milk forever. How is your spiritual diet? Is Bible study a daily and regular part of your life? Do you share Christ with others, or only take it in.

3) My Spiritual Depth Equips Me for Life’s Challenges

”Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” Hebrews 5:13-14
One thing that is for sure in life: It’s challenging. Tough times are coming. To make our way through them, we need to gather discernment and practice spiritual maturity.

The Christian life is an adventure, but it’s no place for infants.

How are you doing with your diet?

The author publishes the Online Christian Shopper Christian T-Shirt store and the Christian blog.
