Article Writing – How You Can Master This Important Writing Skill

As writers, we are constantly being told that writing articles to sell products is the key to internet success, with affiliate riches just around the next corner. If this is indeed the case, why not spend a little time learning how to write an article properly?

Article writing had become an internet phenomenon – a favourite way of marketing for many internet marketers and affiliates. With every popular art form comes problems, however – and make no mistake, writing articles is an art form in itself. The problems for this particular internet marketing formula arose when people started jumping on the bandwagon and churning out the kind of rubbish I see pouring into my article directories in a dismally regular fashion.

You may have seen them: short ‘articles’ of 300 words that don’t have the smallest crumb of information within them. Articles that are so obviously churned out by a piece of (generally substandard) software that they are laughable. Articles that are blatantly not written by the ‘author’ – and so on and so forth.

So what makes a good article? Well, for one thing, an article should contain a beginning, a middle and an end – just like any other story. Because that’s what an article is – a story in miniature, just like a short story, a novelette or a blockbuster epic. The same basic rules of writing apply – and if you don’t have that skill (or worse still can’t be bothered to acquire it) – then chances are that you will NEVER, EVER write good quality articles.

That’s a sobering thought. Yet the skills needed are easily learned and, with practice, writing articles will become second nature to you. You may never be another Stephen King or Clive Cussler – but by knowing how to write interesting, informative articles you will suddenly find that you stand head and shoulders above the vast, rolling sea of ‘article writers’ who can’t be bothered to learn how to write professionally.

Professionally? Why, yes – writing is a profession. Many people tend to think of only the big best-seller names as being professional writers but of course this isn’t true. Anyone who writes anything with a view to profit could be called a professional writer but to be a real pro you must invest some time and effort into your chosen profession – or join the ranks of the couldn’t-care-less.

So – an article must do several things but here are the most important:

It must capture a publisher’s eye. This may be an ezine publisher or webmaster or – if you’re really good as well as lucky! – a paper-based publisher. If it fails to do this, you have wasted your time.

It must capture and hold a reader. If a reader does not read your article right the way through to the resource box – where you get the chance to promote your goods or service – you have wasted your time.

It must be long enough – but not too long. In practice, a minimum of 600 and a maximum of 1,000 words is ideal. Many article directories (the main target of article writers) have minimum word count requirements. Send one to my directory that’s under 600 words and it gets deleted automatically – no matter how good the writer thinks it is! Why? Because – frankly – an article under 600 words shows, to many editors, very little effort being put into the article and not a lot of commitment.

It must NOT be an advertisment. The place to promote is in the resource box at the end. That’s not to say your article shouldn’t relate to your promotional item – it would be a foolish thing to write about hot air ballooning whilst trying to promote skindiving equipment (and yes I have seen instances very nearly as bad as that!).

It must be original. Start copying other people’s work at your peril – you will soon find that there is suddenly no-one accepting your ‘work’ any more. The fact is that copied work is also poor work – unless copied word for word (and only a fool would do that!) the ‘rewriting’ degrades the original piece, leaving you with a poor shadow of a thing that no-one will enjoy reading anyway. Write your own material!

The one real way to learn how to write articles is to learn to write, period. Accept this, put in the time necessary and you will find – sooner than you think! – that your articles start to flow more easily, your work-rate steps a gear and – best of all – you can look at your finished piece with pride and say ‘I wrote that!’

Article Writing Secrets: How to Write a 500-750 Word Articles That Get Published More

It’s easier said than done to write great 500-750 word articles.

Some of us simply have too much to say. We have trouble reigning things in at less than 1500 words. Others are on the opposite end of the spectrum strain to make their articles long enough.

Knowing that a 500-750 word article marketing article has a greater chance of getting published on a top website like About.com, I consistently try to get all of my articles to conform to that range. Today, I reveal some of my secrets so you can get published on more top websites and ezines.

8 Tricks for Writing 500-750 Word Articles That Get Published More Often

1. Create an outline

I write a lot of how-to’s and list articles. They are the simplest and best articles you can write for online marketing purposes. After I write my headline, the first thing I do is write down my tips or the steps of my ‘how-to.’ I make brief notes of the major points I want to make without worrying about polishing anything at this point. All I want to do is jot down the skeleton of my article before I start filling in the paragraphs.

2) Fill in the outline and be brief

Say exactly what you need to say to get your point across and stop there. Remember, if you give too much of the “HOW,” your prospects will have NO reason to go back to your website to get your special report or buy your products and services.

3) Save writing the intro paragraph and the conclusion for the end.

This little trick will cut your writing time in half. Some of us ‘wordy’ folks will instinctively go crazy on our intro paragraph and spend huge amounts of time on it trying to get it just right. Then later, we realize that we’ve just spent half of our word count allotment there!

Focus the majority of your words on the “meat” of the article. This is the part that is in between the intro and the conclusion. For ‘How To’ or other 500-750 word list articles, your intro paragraph can be as simple as two to three sentences that intrigue readers and gracefully lead them into your list. Your closing paragraph should be 2 to 4 sentences that motivate readers to take action and go to the next level.

4) Do a word count.

Copy and paste your article into a Word document and then use the word-count editing tool. This’ll give you an idea of how much you need to trim (if you’re over 800 words already) or how much you have to fill in (if you’re under 700 words).

5) Eliminate all redundancies

Many writers have tendencies to say something one time, and then say it again in the next sentence in a different way. Just say it once, clearly and concisely, and then move on. Look over your article and remove any phrasing that does not absolutely have to be there.

6) Remove unnecessary words

Here’s a task you should complete even if you are in the 500-750 word range. Try to cut down your total word count by 10 percent. You can easily complete this task by eliminating unnecessary words. For example, if you write statements like, “It seem to me that most people prefer soft baked chocolate chip cookies rather than hard ones,” you’ve just used up 5 unnecessary words. You don’t need: “It seems to me that.” Don’t second-guess yourself by putting the qualifier “it seems like,” “I think” or “I believe.”

7) Create 2 articles out of 1.

If your word count is too long and you’ve trimmed out as much as you can from each section, you may end up needing to make your “Top 10″ article into two “Top 5″ articles. If you follow this tip, make sure you write each article as a stand-alone article. When you put part 1 and part 2 in the title, you limit your chances for publication success.

Follow this advice and you will write clear, concise articles that get published and read more often. Now, I’d like to invite you to take your article writing efforts to the next level with my A to Z Article Marketing System.

The Lottery Mentality in Article Writing: More SEO Secrets

We all know what the lottery mentality is, but how does it apply in article writing? Quite a lot in fact!

You know the thing:

If I keep buying tickets then eventually I must win . . .
When I win the lottery . . .
It’s going to me soon . . .
Somebody has to win it . . .

Living on a hope and a prayer, and all the time spending more and more money chasing a dream. One day it will be their turn to become a millionaire. Well do you know what? It never is! The odds of winning Powerball is around 1 in 146 million and even the much smaller UK lottery is 1 in 14 million. So it’s probably true to say that it will never happen to you. If it does, sue me!

So what has this to do with article marketing and writing articles? It should be obvious: people keep thinking that their day will come, when they will make money online. Eventually they will come across the magic formula that will finally work for them.

Well, I have some news for you: you have as much chance of that happening as winning the lottery unless you get off your butt and work for it. This applies equally in the specialty of article marketing as it does in the broader arena of internet marketing in general.

However, the lottery mentality does have some sort of result in terms of article writing as opposed to article marketing in general. If you keep on writing articles in the hope that eventually they you might make your fortune from them, then you might well be right. You have a much better chance of that happening than of winning the lottery, that’s for sure. So how is that?

Let’s have a look at some of the things you might achieve when you write articles:

- You generate content that others might copy to their websites.

- You provide information that might persuade people to click to your site find out more.

- You spread your name as author around and eventually perhaps get recognized.

- You get links back from any directories or websites that publish your articles.

- You get exposure on Google whenever a directory article is listed.

Now, if you have the lottery mentality that if you keep doing it you must win sometime, then with articles you very well could. Why? Because unlike lottery tickets, articles work for you all the time: week after week, month after month and year after year.

Keep buying a lottery ticket and you have only the same chance of millions to one each week with each individual ticket – in other words zilch! Keep writing articles and their power increases with each week. They don’t expire the day after you wrote them, but continue to increase in their effectiveness.

Imagine if every lottery you bought was still active, and that each gave you more of a chance of winning the older it got! That’s what articles do: all you have to do is to write them. Just like your lottery tickets – get through as many as you can in as fast a time as possible, and you will multiply your chances of online success.

So don’t just sit back and wait for it to be your turn: do something about it, get writing and make that lottery mentality work for you in article writing: the best way yet to get free advertising for your website.

But there’s a problem there, isn’t there? How to do it. There are bad ways, good ways and the best ways to write articles. Each may not be same to every person, and so a course on how to actually write the things wouldn’t help too much. However, there are tricks and tips that you can use in your writing, and there are ways to get your articles not only distributed by all the directories you submit them to, but also read.

That’s the important word: ‘read’. There are ways to get your articles read, and here is just one simple tip:

Many people have short attention spans while others want a good read since they believe that the longer the article the more they will learn. You are the latter. However, in order to cater for the other 50% that prefer shorter articles, I have also submitted a 500 word non duplicate version of this 832 word article to all of the same directories. And why not? Submission is free and the writing only takes 15 minutes.

That’s foresight, and one way of getting your article read by as many people as possible. There are more tips like this, but also some very fundamental principles that many never hear about, let alone learn. These are what you have to find out and learn in addition to getting that lottery ticket mentality in seeking success with articles.

Article Writing is a Powerful Marketing Tool

Writing articles to promote your website shouldn’t be underestimated. The benefits of writing articles for your website is huge. If you write good quality articles with good written English you will soon be reaping the rewards. Article writing is free advertising for you website. Good eh? There aren’t many things in life that are free. What you need to think about when writing articles is what page on your website you want to promote. This article for instance is targeting those people who want to learn about article writings, so at the bottom of this article you will see a small bio with a link to a page about writing articles.

Once I have written this article I will add it to my author accounts on Ezine articles and Article alley. I will also post in to around 300 other article directories using a automatic article submission software. This software saves me a lot of time, meaning while it is automatically posting for me I can be writing my next article. Each day I post around 7 or more articles. In a week or so I will be able to search for my article on Google by writing the article title into the search box. 9 times out of 10 I will be number one for that phrase. I then hope that someone will ready my article and follow the link in the bio to the page I am promoting.

As well as driving traffic to my website I am also helping with the link popularity of the sites. Those 300 article directories are a possible 300 links to the page I am promoting. Great! There is a good chance that other people will reprint my article on their websites which adds even more weight to my link popularity campaign. The only trouble with article directories is that as more people add articles in the same category my article will get moved further down the article directories hierarchy. What this means is that my article may well end up on a page that is not indexed. The more articles you write the more of an expert author you become in your chosen field. Your author account page will slowly start to build a page rank which will mean even more weight to the links in the bio’s.

So to summarise, you need to write good quality articles that people will find interesting and would want to read. You need to make sure you write a bio with a link to the page you are promoting, also stating that the article is free to reprint as long the text isn’t changed and the bio remains in tact. Then you need to post your article in as many article directories as possible. And finally keep doing it. The more often you write fresh interesting articles the more chance you have of your target audience finding them and clicking on to your site.

If you don’t have the time to write you article yourself why not enlist the help of a professional article writing service. Some of the main article directories offer article writing as one of their services.
